Football Brawl
Saturday night I saw "highlights" of the University of Miami - Florida International University fight... I mean, football game. It has now been announced that 31 players will be suspended for one week. The video clearly shows one player trying to stomp on another player's head, a player hitting another player with his helmet as a weapon, players punching and kicking each other, etc. And all they're getting is a slap on the wrist, a one-game suspension, which for Miami will be against Duke. Oh, yeah, 'cause Duke is a powerhouse in football -- this will teach the guys a lesson.
It's the third on-field incident involving Miami in their last seven games. That's right -- they're doing this kind of stuff basically every-other game that they play. And there have been at least four off-field incidents involving Miami players in just the past ten months, starting with last January's Peach Bowl. Anyone who follows college football even remotely knows that Miami has had a history of recruiting thugs and useless human beings, then spending the next two-to-four years bailing them out of jail, before sending them to the NFL to make them someone else's problem. This has been going on for at least fifteen years, no matter who the coach and/or AD and/or university president has been.
It's now time for the NCAA to take a stand against Miami. Fire the entire football staff, eliminate all of their scholarships (current and future), and expel each and every player from the university. Completely shut down the Miami football program for at least ten years. After ten years, hold a hearing to determine whether or not the university has changed its environment to be able to support a football program that can follow the rules, play clean games, and educate its players. Obviously this would be unprecedented, but Miami's history with jailbirds has warranted drastic measures.
